U of M President Bruininks Explains What The U of M Will Look Like After Pawlenty Cuts $190 Million From Higher Ed… | DUSTYTRICE.COM
“There are not enough stimulus dollars to mitigate the cuts,” Bruininks said, adding that the U was contemplating a double-digit tuition increase, perhaps as high as 15 percent. “We can’t add very much. I don’t want to burden our students and their families.”
…
“Then [Speaker Kelliher] and the president moved onto jobs. The U has already cut 1,000, and Bruininks figured another 500 to 700 job cuts would be necessary.”(-MinnPost, Bruininks spells out coming hard times at U, G.R. Anderson Jr., May 18, 2009)

To Help Reduce Crime, Hire Ex-Cons, US Atty Urges Chicago Businesses | ABA Journal - Law News Now
In a rare public speech today, a high-profile Illinois prosecutor didn't address a number of hot topics, such as the ongoing prosecution of impeached former Gov. Rod Blagojevich.
But U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald did offer a suggestion about reducing crime in the Windy City, reports Chicago Public Radio.
The city's 4,000 or so police officers could use some help dealing with perhaps 70,000 to 100,000 gang members, Fitzgerald says--and he called on local businesses to do their part by hiring ex-convicts. His office runs a program called Project Safe Neighborhoods that offers people convicted of gun crimes an alternative to a life of violence.

"he Pew survey is a testament to the miscalculations of the Bush administration and of the Republican leadership in Congress. The two were handed an extraordinary opportunity to build on an outpouring of public support in the wake of the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. Instead, those chances to revive a Republican majority were squandered on a mismanaged invasion of Iraq and dissipated by ill-advised culture war offensives, as well as by disclosure of corrupt lobbying and spending scandals in Congress under Republican rule."
